Workshop `Political Instability in Authoritarian and Semi- Authoritarian Regimes in Eurasia 20 years after the Disintegration of the USSR and Yugoslavia' in the X AECPA CONGRESS
September 7-9, 2011
The University of Murcia, Murcia, Spain.
Eurasianet.es is accepting paper proposals for the workshop `Political Instability in Authoritarian and Semi- Authoritarian Regimes in Eurasia 20 years after the Disintegration of the USSR and Yugoslavia' within the X AECPA CONGRESS (Spanish Association of Political Science). The event will be held at the University of Murcia.
This panel aims at examining the nature of the authoritarian and semi-authoritarian regimes that emerged from the disintegration of the USSR and Yugoslavia in 1991. Having transitioned to democratic systems in the beginning, the countries in the Balkans, the Caucasus, Eastern Europe, Russian Federation and Central Asia have been prone to experience severe political instability crises. Although departing from similar structural conditions post-communist regimes in Eurasia diverged into very different directions, democracy succeeding in a few cases only twenty years later.
What factors can explain the overturn of the 1991 bet for liberal democracy in some of these countries? Or, conversely, what factors explain the consolidation of semi-authoritarian regimes? Can the persistence of institutional legacies -i.e. patrimonial communism- explain the inefficiency of the democratic path? Or, does it have more to do with the elite's lack of commitment to democracy? What role has civil society played in sustaining or rejecting these regimes? Or, to what extent are political dynamics dependent upon US-Russian Federation relations?
Practitioners and scholars in social science disciplines are encouraged to participate.
