UG Lecturer's Latest Book Chapter Explores the Potential of Nanomaterials and 3D Printing in Sustainable Product Development

Professor Fariborz Sharifian Jazi, a lecturer at The University of Georgia, as the most influence researcher 2023 in at the University of Georgia has recently published a book chapter titled "Nanomaterials and 3D Printing" in the book "3D Printing and Sustainable Product Development". We had the opportunity to interview Professor Sharifian Jazi about his latest publication and his insights on the future of nanomaterials and 3D printing in sustainable product development. Here are his responses:

1.     What impact can this research have on human life?

The research on nanomaterials and 3D printing has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of human life, from healthcare to energy to manufacturing. Nanomaterials, which are materials with dimensions on the nanoscale (typically less than 100 nanometers), exhibit unique properties that can be leveraged for a wide range of applications. For example, they can create stronger, lighter, and more durable materials for building structures, vehicles, and electronics. They can also be used to develop new drug delivery systems targeting specific cells or tissues in the body, leading to more effective and personalized treatments for diseases such as cancer. Moreover, the combination of nanomaterials and 3D printing technology allows for the creating of complex and precise structures with unprecedented control over their properties and functions. This can enable the development of new devices and systems that were previously impossible to make, such as microfluidic devices for lab-on-a-chip applications, sensors for environmental monitoring, and even artificial organs for transplantation. Overall, the impact of nanomaterials on human life can be immense, as they have the potential to improve many aspects of our daily lives and address some of the most pressing challenges facing society today.

2.     How do you suggest students can conduct successful research like you?

Regarding your question, I think one of the best ways to be successful in research is to have familiarity with research methods and academic writing. The best way to start is by reading books and articles related to your field of interest. Additionally, participating in relevant training courses and workshops can also be helpful. Learning how to write a research paper and conduct research can be very beneficial for students who are interested in pursuing it.

3.     What were the main challenges and skills involved in conducting this research?

Undoubtedly, writing the chapter on nanomaterials and 3D printing presented several challenges that required specific skills to overcome. One of the most significant obstacles I faced was gathering and organizing the information. As this is a multidisciplinary subject, I had to consult various sources to obtain comprehensive and up-to-date data. This process was time-consuming and required careful attention to detail. Additionally, I   had to carefully select the graphs and figures to ensure that they were clear and informative for the reader. Despite these challenges, we are proud of the final result and believe that it provides valuable insights into this exciting field.

4.     How can students get involved in this field, and why should they do so?

There are several ways for students to get involved in the field of nanomaterials and 3D printing. One way is to pursue a degree in a related field such as nano-materials and materials science, or nanotechnology. Another way is to participate in research projects or internships that focus on these technologies.

Students should consider getting involved in this field because it offers a wide range of opportunities for innovation and discovery. Nanomaterials and 3D printing have the potential to revolutionize many industries, from healthcare to aerospace. By working in this field, students can contribute to the development of new materials and technologies that have the potential to improve people's lives. In addition, the field of nanomaterials and 3D printing is constantly evolving, which means that there is always something new to learn and discover. Students who are interested in this field can expect to be challenged and stimulated by the work they do, and they can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career.

5.     What made you interested in researching this subject?

I have always been fascinated by the potential of nanomaterials and 3D printing to revolutionize the way we design and manufacture products. As a researcher in the field of materials science, I have seen firsthand how these technologies can be used to create complex structures with unprecedented precision and control. Moreover, I believe that the combination of nanomaterials and 3D printing has the potential to address some of the most pressing challenges facing our society, from healthcare to energy to sustainability. Therefore, I was eager to explore this subject further and share my insights with others through this book chapter.

6.     What feedback has this particular research received so far?

As this book chapter is a recent publication, the feedback on this particular research is still being gathered. However, initial responses have been positive, with some experts in the field expressing interest in the innovative combination of nanomaterials and 3D printing that is presented in the chapter. Additionally, some reviewers have noted the potential practical applications of the research in various industries, including healthcare, electronics, and energy. We are looking forward to receiving more feedback and engaging in further discussions with readers and experts in the field.

7.     What role did the University of Georgia play in your accomplishment?

The University of Georgia played a significant role in my accomplishment by providing me with a supportive academic environment and access to resources that helped me develop my skills and knowledge. Specifically, the university offered a range of courses and research opportunities that allowed me to explore my interests and develop expertise in my field. Overall, I am grateful for the opportunities and support that the University of Georgia provided me, and I believe that my accomplishments are a testament to the quality of education and resources that the university offers.

8.     Is there anything you would like to say to our students in addition?

I would like to say that as students, you are in a unique position to shape the future of nanomaterials and 3D printing. These fields are rapidly evolving and offer endless possibilities for innovation and discovery. I encourage you to stay curious, keep learning, and never be afraid to ask questions.
