The first edition of the architectural summer school AA Visiting School: Archival Land(e)scapes – Material Fragments of Samshvilde has successfully concluded in Samshvilde, organized through a close partnership between the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture and the University of Georgia (UG).
Over eleven days, nine selected students, researchers, and practitioners from Georgia, the UK, Japan, Italy, Egypt, and Bulgaria explored the spatial and historical landscape of the ancient fortified town overlooking Samshvilde Canyon, developing research-based projects and small-scale architectural interventions.
Under the guidance of program leaders and organizers Nodar Kvanchiani, Salome Gugunava, Levan Dzgevelashvili, and Ucha Zghudadze, alongside international tutors and guest lecturers, participants explored diverse approaches, including mapping, 3D photogrammetry, GIS cartography, soundscape research, drawing, and temporary architectural installations.
The program also featured hikes, workshops introducing local food and winemaking traditions, and a woodworking studio visit. The summer school concluded with public presentations and on-site installations among Samshvilde’s ancient ruins, demonstrating how historic heritage can be understood as a living, evolving archive.
The project will continue, offering future opportunities for interested students to participate in upcoming editions of the summer school.
