Georgian University hosted the public lecture organized by non governmental organization Internet Development Initiative – IDI. Vice President of ICANN Michael Yakushev spoke about the  ICANN, its structure, legal framework of global Internet Governance and other interesting topics.

“ICANN is the The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It is the nonprofit organization which is responsible for coordinating the maintenance and procedures of several databases related to the name spaces of the Internet, ensuring the network’s stable and secure operation. We are doing a lot of effort in order to make the global Internet infrastructure, safe, stable and resilient.  For us Georgia is an interesting region and we think about launching the engagement centers here. Georgia has a very good, friendly and well educated population  which has a big potential for different Internet governance projects.  I think that along with IDI we will be able to start up man interesting projects”,-said Yakushev.

Among the attendants, were the students of different faculties including the informatics, Business and public administration. “Todays meeting was very interesting and useful. I’ve heard about the ICANN before , but after the lecture I found out more details. After the lecture we were given the possibility of asking the questions and getting the answers on the topics we were interested in. I hope we will have a chance to attend the meting like that in future as  well. I would like to express my gratitude towards the organizers”,-said the student of Georgian University.

Must be mentioned that Several months ago IDI, along with the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies (GFSIS) presented a training program titled – Investigating Domain Names and Internet Numbers, to public sector actors who have a role in investigating or mitigating cyber attacks, to 18 participants from multiple Georgia agencies including the Data Exchange Agency, Office of the Personal Data Protection, Prosecutor Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs, National Bank and Georgian National Communications Commission. Training course was held by Dave Piscitello, VP Security and ICT Coordination, ICANN.

Internet Development initiative plans to organize similar seminars in future as well. one of the main idea, is to rise awareness of the society regarding the informational security and the Cyber security.
