As part of the collaboration between the University of Georgia and the American Numismatic Society, the photography of the Georgian coin collection and the study of archival documentation have been completed under the supervision of Professor David Berikashvili. The American Numismatic Society (ANS), located in New York City, United States, houses coins from different countries and historical periods, including Georgian coins, which represent important material, cultural, and historical sources of the Georgian state.
The project entitled “Research and Publication of Georgian Coins Preserved in the Collections of the American Numismatic Society” is a winner of the Scientific Institute Grant Competition of the University of Georgia. The project aims to prepare a numismatic catalogue that will present the complete collection of Georgian coins preserved in the holdings of the American Numismatic Society. Notably, the catalogue will be accessible to all interested individuals worldwide, which will further increase international awareness of Georgian history and cultural heritage.
The American Numismatic Society, whose collections contain nearly one million unique coins from various countries, is considered the world’s largest numismatic repository. It is particularly significant that the collection also includes outstanding examples of Georgian numismatics, ranging from Colchian tetri to coins minted in the name of the kings of a unified Georgia.
